The Hon. Donald J. Sullivan (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed by former governor Gray Davis on October 8, 2003, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. David A Garcia. Sullivan retired from the bench on February 28, 2017.
Sullivan earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from Santa Clara University in 1968. He then continued his studies at the Santa Clara University School of Law, where he received a J.D. in 1971.
He began his legal career as an attorney for the California Department of Transportation. During his tenure there, he handled eminent domain, inverse condemnation, and government tort liability cases. Sixteen years later, he entered private practice. He worked as an associate at Herron and Herron as well as The Brandi Law Firm, where he litigated toxic tort, labor and employment, products liability, medical malpractice, and wrongful death cases.
While on the bench, Sullivan presided over the United Family Court. He oversaw the division of property in addition to child support, child custody, and juvenile dependency matters.
Sullivan has served as past-president of the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association. He has also been a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
He was named Judge of the Year by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association in 2013.
His hobbies include traveling, learning new languages, reading, hiking, and swimming. He is also a stamp and coin collector.
