Biography

The Hon. David S. Cunningham, III is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2009. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Xenophon F. Lang.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Cunningham graduated summa cum laude with his B.A. in economics from the University of Southern California in 1977. He went on to earn his J.D. from New York University Law School in 1980. During college as well as while in law school, Judge Cunningham completed fellowships with Northwestern University in Chicago and for the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York.

After graduating from law school, Cunningham clerked for the Hon. Terry J. Hatter, Jr., a District Judge with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in 1983. After his clerkship, he joined the law firm of Finley, Kumble, Heine, Underberg, Manley, and Casey as an associate in 1984. While practicing for the firm, Judge Cunningham also taught at the Loyola Law School as an adjunct professor. In 1989 he left the firm to practice for the Los Angeles firm of Donovan, Leisure, Newton, and Irvine.

Then-mayor James Hahn appointed him to Los Angeles Police Commission President in 2001 and Cunningham served a 4-year term. Cunningham joined the firm Jackson and Lewis in 2005. He left Jackson and Lewis in 2005 to become a partner for the law firm Kelly, Lytton, and Vann until 2007 when he became a principal at Meyers, Nave, Riback, Silver, and Wilson. He was still practicing for the firm at the time of his appointment to the Superior Court in 2009.

During his lengthy legal career, Judge Cunningham was also active in the community having served on the Board of Directors for the Midnight Mission, as well as the Board of Directors for the Alliance College-Ready Public Schools.

Some of his many memberships have included the Los Angeles Urban League, the Los Angeles Business Council, the Equity Oversight Panel for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, and the Watts Health Foundation Community Trust, to name a few.
