Biography

The Hon. David G. Brown is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on April 7, 2005, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Sheridan E. Reed.

Brown earned an A.B. in psychology from Occidental College in 1972. He then received a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1975 and an M.A. in management information systems and services from the University of Southern California in 1980.

Brown began his legal career as a criminal prosecutor with the United States Marine Corps in 1975. Then, in 1980, he joined Neil, Dymott, Frank, McCabe & Hudson, where he handled medical malpractice cases for more than twenty-five years.

Brown was named Lawyer of the Year by the San Diego Defense Lawyers Association in 2003. He has also served as an advocate of the American Board of Trial Advocates, a member of the National Board of Trial Advocacy, and a diplomate for the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys.

Brown served in combat operations during the Iraq War and Operation Enduring Freedom. He served in the Joint Unit, where he was tasked with detecting and preventing nuclear, biological, and chemical explosives. He also worked as a Ground Watch Officer for the First Marine Expeditionary Force Command Element, tracking and reporting the progress of ground units.

He is a recipient of the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Korea Defense Services Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Meritorious Unit Award.

He is registered as a Democrat.

    Plaintiff Erick Gonzalez' motion to tax costs is denied. On November 6, 2017, defendant Chris Hartjen dba The Vapor Trail served plaintiff with a CCP § 998 offer for $450,000. The offer was not accepted. On October 17, 2018, this Court entered judgment after jury trial in favor of defendant. On October 26, 2018, defendant filed a costs memo seeking to recover $112,486.74 in costs. As the prevailing party, defendant is entitled to recover reasonable costs. If the items on their face appear to be proper charges, the verified memorandum of costs is prima facie evidence of their propriety
