The Hon. Daniel J. Calabretta is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench on November 29, 2018, by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Cheryl Chun Meegan (Ret.).
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Calabretta graduated with honors with his B.A. from Princeton University in 2000. He went on to earn his J.D. magna cum laude from the University of Chicago Law School in 2003.
After graduating from law school, Calabretta became a clerk for the Hon. William Fletcher with the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In 2004, he would also serve a year-long clerkship for the Hon. John Paul Stevens with the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.
After completing his clerkships, Calabretta became an associate with the law firm Munger, Tolles and Olson LLP in Los Angeles, where he would practice until 2008.
In that same year, he joined the California Department of Justice's Office of the Attorney General, where he served as a deputy attorney general for five years.
Then, in 2013, Calabretta joined the Office of the Governor, where he served as the deputy legal affairs secretary to then-governor Brown. He would hold that position until the governor's term was up in 2019.
While on the bench, Judge Calabretta has presided over the Dependency Department.
