The Hon. Clifford V. Cretan is a judge for the Superior Court of San Mateo County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2004.
Cretan earned a B.A. in history from the University of California, Berkeley in 1969. He then continued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, where he completed a J.D. in 1972.
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Cretan was a criminal defense attorney at Thirkell & Cretan from 1981 to 2004.
Before that, he served as a deputy district attorney in the Office of the District Attorney of San Mateo County from 1974 to 1981.
When not presiding over cases, Cretan is an avid runner. He has also coached basketball at Burlingame High School.
