The Hon. Clare M. Maier is a judge on the Superior Court of Contra Costa County, California. She was appointed by former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to a newly created seat on October 3, 2007. She was automatically re-elected in 2010 after running unopposed.
Judge Maier earned her B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1987 and her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law in 1990.
After law school, Judge Maier became an associate attorney at the law office of Paul Hastings where she was from 1990 to 1992. Maier then was an associate at Cooley Godward from 1992 to 1993. She became a deputy public and alternate public defender from 1993 to 2001. Prior to her appointment from 2001 to 2007 Maier was a Contra Costa Superior Court commissioner.
Since Maier has been on the bench she has been the U.S. Trainer for Macedonian Judges in Advanced Targeted Criminal Procedure Training. She also was an Adjunct Professor and guest lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley Boalt School of Law School. She has been the instructor for numerous judicial continuing education programs and has been a featured speaker at many judicial conferences.
Judge Maier has won many awards for her legal achievements including the Wiley P. Manual Award for pro bono service in 1992, the 2010 Zero Tolerance Award for Leadership and Service, the 2014 Women’s section of the Contra Costa County Bar Association Service Award and the 2015 Rose Bird Memorial Award.
She is a Democrat.
