Biography

The Hon. Brian S. Currey is an associate justice for the Second District Court of Appeal, Division 4 in California. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal by former governor Jerry Brown in 2018. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Nora Manella.

Judge Currey was originally appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court in 2014 by then-governor Brown. He succeeded Lawrence J. Mira upon his retirement from the bench.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Currey graduated with his B.A. in economics from the University of California, Davis in 1978. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1981.

After he graduated from law school, Currey joined the law firm of O'Melveny and Myers, LLP in 1981. He started out as an associate for the firm, where he practiced complex litigation involving corporate investigations, one of which included the Exxon Valdez case. In 1989 Currey was made a partner for the firm and would go on to serve as vice-chair for the firm's litigation department.

It was during that time that Currey helped create an award-winning program at the firm that involved pairing lawyers to smaller cities to act as pro bono prosecutors, which in turn allowed them to gain trial experience.

In 2010 Currey joined former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as Counsel to the Mayor. In March of 2013, he was named Deputy Mayor for Economic and Business Policy, where he helped manage then-mayor Villaraigosa's business and economic agenda.

In July of 2013, Currey re-joined the law firm of O'Melveny and Myers, LLP, where he served as Of Counsel until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2014.

During his time on the Superior Court, Judge Currey served as a judge pro tem for the Second District Court of Appeal.

He has taught at the USC Gould School of Law.

Judge Currey enjoys running and fly-fishing.
