Biography

The Hon. Ana L. España is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on July 21, 2008, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Janet Kintner.

España earned a B.A. from the University of San Diego in 1979. She then continued her studies at the University of San Diego School of Law, where she received a J.D. in 1982.

España began her legal career in 1983, working as an attorney for Defenders, Inc. During her two-year tenure there, she represented children and parents in child welfare and child delinquency proceedings. She then joined Reilly & Jeffery, where she worked as an associate until 1988.

She spent the remainder of her legal career serving as a deputy public defender for the Office of the Public Defender of San Diego County, where she was recognized as one of the state’s leading child advocates. During her time there, she would help create the Office of Children’s Counsel, a section within the Office of the Public Defender tasked with representing children in the welfare system.

She is a recipient of the Outstanding Legal Advocate Award from the National Association of Counsel for Children (2011).

España is registered as a Democrat.
