The Hon. Alexandra Robert Gordon is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. She was appointed by former governor Jerry Brown on October 26, 2018, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Ronald Evans Quidachay.
Gordon earned a B.A. in history from Brown University in 1991. She then received an M.Phil. in English literature from the University of Oxford in 1993. After completing her studies, she briefly worked as a speechwriter for Hillary Clinton, the former First Lady, as well as Richard Brown, the former U.S. Secretary of Commerce. She then enrolled at Harvard Law School, where she received a J.D. in 1998.
Gordon began her legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. Robert Sweet of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York in 1998. The following year, she joined Heller Ehrman as an associate, a position she held until 2001. She then joined the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit as a staff attorney and supervisor.
Prior to her appointment to the bench, Gordon served as a deputy attorney general in the Office of the Attorney General of California. She was a member of its Government Law Section from 2009 to 2018, where she represented constitutional officers in state and federal trial and appellate courts. Some of her notable cases have included challenges to a California law banning possession of shark fin as well as a California law banning the possession of large-capacity magazines.
Gordon received the California Lawyer of the Year Award in 2014. This award recognized her efforts defending the constitutionality of a law that prohibits mental health professionals from prescribing treatments to change the sexual orientation of minors.
Gordon is registered as a Democrat.
