Biography

Hon. Alexander C.D. Giza is a judge for the Los Angeles Superior Court in California. He succeeded the Hon. Laura A. Matz when she retired. Giza was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown on November 29, 2018.

Judge Giza graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1989. While at the University of Virginia, Giza was a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu Societies and was also the president of the fencing team when they won the VA state championship in 1989. When Judge Giza graduated from the University of Virginia he worked as an electrical engineer for such companies as Westinghouse, IAI America as well as Eaton. He was also a trademark practitioner with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Giza went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 2000, where he was a Teaching Fellow while in attendance. During his time at the UCLA School of Law Giza completed internships for both the Hon. Arthur L. Alarcon with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, as well as the Hon. William J. Rea of the U.S. District Court, Central District of California.

After he graduated from UCLA School of Law, Giza began his law career in 2000 as a Law Clerk for the Hon. Walter L. Carpeneti with the Alaska Supreme Court. He then left to become an Associate at Irell and Manella LLP, a law firm in Los Angeles, CA. He was elevated to Counsel at the law firm in 2009. Giza left to become a Partner at the law firm of Russ, August, and Kabat in Los Angeles, CA in 2009. He continued on with the firm until 2014 when he became co-founder and Partner of the law firm Hueston Hennigan LLP in California, where he remained until he was appointed to the Superior Court in 2018.

His area of practice focused heavily on intellectual property litigation. Giza has also served as a member of the of the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association (LAIPLA).
