Judge Yvonne Lewis - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Yvonne Lewis (Ret.) was a justice of the Kings County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the Second Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the Supreme Court in 1991 and was retained in subsequent elections. Lewis retired in 2015.

She began her judicial career as a judge for the Civil Court for the City of New York in Kings County after being elected to the seat in 1986. At the time, Lewis held the distinction of being the first African-American woman to sit on the Court. During her tenure on the Civil Court, she was designated to the Civil Court in Queens County (1986 to 1991) and the Criminal Court in Kings County (1987 to 1988 and 1991).

Lewis received a B.S. in education and secondary social studies at the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1967. She went on to complete a J.D. at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law in 1974.

Prior to joining the bench, she worked as a managing attorney at Bronx Legal Services, the assistant to the Regional Director at Legal Services Corp., and as a staff attorney at Brooklyn Legal Services Corp.

Lewis taught as a professor of clinical studies at Hofstra Law School. She also served as moderator and president of the National Consortium on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts.

Lewis also served on the Advisory Committee of Judicial Ethics and the Kings County Black History Month Committee and was a commission member on the Board of the Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission.

Her memberships included the Judicial Friends (past-president), the Metropolitan Black Bar Association (board of directors), the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, the Women’s Bar Association of New York, the National Bar Association’s Judicial Council, the National Conference of Black Lawyers, the National Association of Women Judges, the National Lawyers Guild, the NAACP, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the National Council of Negro Women, the Brownstoners of Bedford-Stuyvesant, and the Bedford-Stuyvesant Early Child Development (board of directors).
