The Hon. Yvette Verastegui is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2010. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Michael S. Mink.
She is a registered Democrat.
Judge Verastegui attended Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California before transferring to the University of California Irvine (UCI). She received her bachelor's degree in English from UCI in 1990. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law in 1993.
Verastegui joined the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office in 1994 as a deputy public defender. In that same year, she joined the Orange County Public Defender's Office, where she served in the same capacity. After seven years as an Orange County public defender, Verastegui joined the Los Angeles Alternate Public Defender's Office in 2001 as a deputy alternate public defender. She remained with the Public Defender's office until her appointment to the Superior Court in 2010.
Judge Verastegui is an active public speaker. She was a speaker for her alma mater Golden West College's 2004 Commencement ceremony, the keynote speaker for the California State University, Fullerton's 2011 Breaking the Cycle event, and an impact speaker for the Raise Foundation's 22nd Annual Blue Ribbon Month Kick Off Ceremony for the National Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month in 2016.
Her memberships have included the California Public Defender's Association, the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Mexican American Bar Association, and the Latino Lawyers Bar Association.
She was the recipient of the Orange County Public Defender of the Year Award.
