View Judge DashboardThe Hon. William A. MacLaughlin is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Pete Wilson in 1992.
Judge MacLaughlin received his B.A. from Yale University, New Haven Connecticut in 1957. He went on to earn his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1960.
MacLaughlin joined the law firm of Gibson, Dunn, O'Melveny, and Myer as an associate after graduating from law school. He left the firm to serve a brief stint in the military. After completing his military service, MacLaughlin formed the law firm Wetherbee and MacLaughlin in 1964. In 1974 he formed the law firm MacLaughlin and Gerber. He became a sole practitioner in 1978. His 31-year legal career was spent as a civil litigator.
Judge MacLaughlin has served as a supervising judge and presiding judge for the Superior Court.
He was named Judge of the Year in 1997 by the San Fernando Valley Bar Association, Trial Judge of the Year in 2000 by the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles, and the Metropolitan News-Enterprises' Person of the Year in 2005.
His love of horses led him to become a cattle rancher and competition cattle roper.
