Judge Wade M. Rhyne - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Wade M. Rhyne is a judge for the Superior Court of Contra Costa County in California. Rhyne was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on May 22, 2017, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Trevor S. White.

Rhyne received a B.S. from the University of California, Davis. He then completed a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

After graduating from law school, Rhyne entered active duty as an officer with the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General Corps. During his service, he handled criminal and civil matters, providing free legal assistance to military service members and veterans.

He began his civilian legal career in 2004. He first worked as an associate at Morrison and Foerster. Two years later, he accepted a position as a law clerk for the Hon. Martin J. Jenkins at the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Then, in 2007, he joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of California. He started as an assistant U.S. attorney in its criminal division, eventually becoming deputy branch chief in 2015.

Just prior to his appointment to the bench, Rhyne served as a trial attorney for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.

He is a former member of the Contra Costa County Bar Association, the Bar Association of San Francisco, the Robert G. McGrath Inn of Court, and the U.C. Hastings Alumni Association.

Rhyne was raised on his family’s ranch in Paso Robles, California. As a child, he was very involved in sports, especially basketball and baseball. His great-great-uncle, Harold “Hal” Rhyne, was a professional baseball player in the 1920s.

In his free time, Rhyne enjoys spending time with my wife and daughters, particularly when they partake in fishing, skiing, or golfing. He also says the television show "Game of Thrones" is his guilty pleasure.

He is not registered with any party.
