Judge W. Gregg McCaulie: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. W. Gregg McCaulie (Ret.) served as a judge for the 4th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. McCaulie was appointed to the bench by former Governor Lawton Chiles in 1996. He retired on January 31, 2020.


The 4th Judicial Circuit encompasses Clay County, Duval County, and Nassau County. McCaulie held assignments in the Family Division, the Civil Division, and the Criminal Division. He also sat on the Board for the Teen Court.


McCaulie earned a J.D. from the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1974. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1975.


After graduating from law school, McCaulie began his legal career as an assistant public defender. He served in that capacity until 1979, at which time he entered into private practice at Allen, Margol, Fryefield & McCaulie. He remained with the firm for two years, eventually leaving to join Carleton Maddox and Jeff Peterson. He traveled the state, practicing criminal defense and family law before starting his own private practice as a sole practitioner. Then, in 1992, he joined Hand, Drew, Mercier & Showalter.


McCaulie was raised in the Ortega neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida. He enjoys whitewater kayaking, canoeing, and rafting. He also skis and plays golf.
