The Hon. Virginia K. DeMarchi is a magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. She was appointed to the bench on June 4, 2018 to fill a seat vacated by the Hon. Howard Lloyd (Ret.).
DeMarchi earned an A.B. from Stanford University in 1990. She then completed a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1993.
She began her legal career as a federal judicial law clerk for the Hon. Steven J. McAuliffe of the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire in 1993. After her clerkship concluded, DeMarchi joined the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice. She served there for two years as a trial attorney before relocating to Silicon Valley in 1996.
DeMarchi devoted the remainder of her legal career to Fenwick & West, where she represented technology and life sciences companies in patent infringement and intellectual property matters.
She has served on the Board of Directors of the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley. She has also had an active pro bono practice representing federal and state inmates and victims of domestic violence.
