The Hon. V. Raymond Swope is a judge for the Superior Court of San Mateo County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2009, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Carl W. Holm.
Swope earned a B.A. from Drake University. He then continued his studies at Drake Law School, where he completed a J.D.
He began his legal career as an associate at Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker in 1989. He practiced there for one year, quickly leaving to settle into a position at Ropers, Majeski, Kohn & Bentley. He entered the firm as an associate, and he rose to partner in 1995.
Then, in 1997, he left the firm and joined the Law Office of Charlotte M. Venner. His time there would be brief. The following year he joined the Office of County Counsel of San Mateo County, where he served as deputy county counsel until his appointment to the bench.
When not presiding over cases, Swope volunteers in the nursery at his church.
He was born in Hampton, Virginia. He was a resident of Menlo Park, California at the time of his appointment.
Swope is registered as a Democrat.
