The Honorable Thomas T. Lewis

Biography

The Hon. Thomas T. Lewis is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2006 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas Peterson (Ret.).

Judge Lewis graduated cum laude with his B.A. in American studies from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1975. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of La Verne College of Law in 1978.

Prior to his appointment to the Superior Court, Lewis was a named partner at the law firm of Rehwald, Rameson, Lewis, and Glasner, where he had practiced since 1984.

In 1985, Lewis became one of the first attorney's to be certified as a Family Law Specialist by the California State Bar. He would go on to become a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in 1988 and fellow of the International Academy of Family Law Lawyers in 2015.

During his time on the bench, Judge Lewis served as the assistant supervising judge for the Family Law Division from 2012 to 2014 and became the supervising judge for the Family Law Division in 2016.

He has served as an instructor for the California Family Law Report, where he taught the advanced family law program, the basic training program, the evidence program, as well as the expert series program. Lewis also served as a faculty member for the Center for Judicial Education and Research, where he served on the judicial training committee for Family Law.

His memberships have included the Family Law and Juvenile Advisory Commission, the past-president of the California Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, the International Academy of Family Lawyers, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists.

Some of his awards have included the 2018 Family Law Judicial Officer of the Year, the 2017 Stanley Mosk Legacy of Justice Award, and the 2016 Family Law Judge of the Year Award, just to name a few.

Judge Lewis has also made written contributions to the Center for Judicial Education and Research's Bench Guide as well as the Rutter Group's Family Law Practice Guide.
