Biography

The Hon. Thomas J. Schneider (Ret.) served as a judge for the North Dakota South Central Judicial District. Schneider was elected to the bench in 1994. He retired at the conclusion of his term on December 31, 2019.


The South Central Judicial District includes Burleigh County, Emmons County, Grant County, McLean County, Mercer County, Morton County, Oliver County, Sioux County, and Sheridan County.


Schneider earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota in 1972. He then completed a J.D. at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1981.


After graduating from law school, Schneider entered into private practice. He supplemented his practice with service as a judge for the Mandan Municipal Court (1982 to 1986) as well as a judicial referee for the South Central Judicial District. Then, in 1986, he became a county judge for Morton County, Grant County, and Sioux County.
