Judge Thomas D. Colin - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Thomas D. Colin (Ret.) served as a judge for the Stamford/Norwalk Judicial District Superior Court in Connecticut. Colin was appointed to the bench by former Governor Dannel Malloy in 2013. He retired in 2018 and entered into private practice at Schoonmaker, George & Blomberg. Colin currently leads the mediation and arbitration department at Siegel, Colin & Kaufman.

Over the course of his judicial career, Colin held assignments on the Education Committee of the Connecticut Judges Institute and the Evidence Oversight Committee of the Connecticut Supreme Court.

Colin earned a bachelor’s degree from Long Island University Post in 1989. He then completed a J.D. at St. John's University School of Law in 1992. He is admitted to practice in Connecticut (1992), New York (1993), and Maine (1993).

After graduating from law school, Colin began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Paul L. Rudman of the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine. Then, after the conclusion of his clerkship, he entered into private practice at Cummings & Lockwood in Stamford. During this time, he acquired extensive trial and mediation experience in complex child custody and financial divorce related matters.

His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Connecticut Bar Association, the Fairfield County Bar Association, and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He also sat on the Connecticut Family Matters Advisory Board and the Alimony Reform Study Committee of the Connecticut Law Revision Commission.

Colin was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York.
