The Hon. Therese M. Foley is a judge for the Superior Court of Kern County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on November 29, 2018, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Gary T. Friedman.
Foley earned a B.A. from Santa Clara University. She then completed a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
She began her legal career as an associate at Adams, Ball, Wenzel and Kilian in 1977. Four years later, she left the firm and joined the Law Office of Gene R. McMurtrey. She practiced there for the next eight years, the last of which would be spent as a partner.
Then, in 1989, she started her own private practice as a sole practitioner. During this time, she served a series of short stints for different public agencies. These included the Office of County Counsel for Kern County and Mendocino County as well as the Kern County Department of Mental Health and the Kern County Department of Child Support Services. She also served as a law clerk to the Magistrate Judge Theresa Goldner of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California.
Foley was a resident of Bakersfield at the time of her appointment.
She is registered as a Democrat.
