Judge Theodore M. Weathers: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Theodore M. Weathers is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Gray Davis in 2003, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Lawrence Stirling.

Weathers earned a B.A. from Rutgers University. He then received a J.D. from New York Law School.

Weathers began his legal career in New York City, where he served as an assistant district attorney in the Office of the District Attorney of Bronx County from 1981 to 1985. He then joined the CIBA-Geigy Corporation. He spent the next three years working as in-house counsel for this pharmaceutical company, where he oversaw its products liability defense cases. Then, in 1988, he left to start his own private practice.

Weathers relocated to California in 1990. He accepted a position as a deputy public defender for the Office of the Public Defender of San Diego County. Ten years later, he was selected to serve as a court commissioner for the Superior Court of San Diego County. He held this position until his appointment to the bench, presiding over misdemeanor, traffic, small claims, unlawful detainer, and short cause civil cases.

Weathers has been a member of the Lawyers Club of San Diego and the Tom Homann Law Association.

He was a recipient of the President’s Award from the International Association of LGBT Judges.
