Judge Terre L. Vandervoort: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Terre L. Vandervoort is a judge for the Probate & Juvenile Division of the Fairfield County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Kasich on July 19, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Steven O. Williams.


Over the course of her judicial career, Vandervoort developed the first county diversion program for juvenile nonviolent first-time offenders. She also helped create the Positive Youth Development Track as well as a preventive Community Request for Services Program and a Cyber Safety Education Program.


Vandervoort is the author of the Fairfield County Domestic Violence Protocol. She was awarded the Ohio Victims of Crime Public Policy Leadership Award for her work on family safety. She also devoted her time to mental health collaborations, receiving the ADMH Community Award for developing partnerships for treatment of those experiencing mental health crises.


Prior to her appointment, Vandervoort was the Law Director of the City of Lancaster Law Department, a position to which she was selected in 1996. Before that, she was an assistant prosecutor for the City of Lancaster Law Department (1992 to 1995).


Vandervoort earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Miami University in 1987. She then completed a J.D. at the Ohio State University, Michael E. Moritz College of Law in 1990.


After graduating from law school, Vandervoort entered into private practice, working as an associate at Sitterley and Vandervoort. She held that position for two years, eventually leaving to join the City of Lancaster Law Department.


Her memberships have included the Board of Directors of Lighthouse and the Board of the Fairfield County Child Advocacy Center.


She is a recipient of the Government Attorney of the Year Award from the Ohio State Bar Foundation (2006) and the Friends of Adoption Award from the Fairfield County Child Protective Services.


A resident of Lancaster, Ohio, Vandervoort graduated from Lancaster High School. She is married with two children and identifies as a Methodist. When not presiding over legal matters, she enjoys running, biking, and trying to surf.


She is registered as a Republican.
