The Hon. Susan J. De Witt is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench in 2017 by former governor Jerry Brown.
She is a registered Democrat.
Judge De Witt received her B.S. from the University of California, Riverside. She went on to earn her J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1987.
After graduating from law school, De Witt began a year-long clerkship with the Hon. John G. Davies with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. She completed her clerkship in 1988 and would go on to spend almost a decade practicing complex business dispute litigation as an associate at the law firms of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley, and McCloy LLP from 1988 to 1991, and White and Case LLP from 1992 to 1997.
De Witt became an assistant U.S. Attorney in 1997 when she joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California. De Witt remained with the USAO for over twenty years, where she served in various roles including deputy chief, acting executive assistant U.S. Attorney, and special counsel to the U.S. Attorney. She also served on special detail for two years as the national security coordinator, civil rights coordinator, and counsel for the director of the U.S. Department of Justice's Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys in Washington, D.C. During her tenure with the USAO, De Witt helped prosecute a wide range of crimes including money laundering and organized crime, fraud, murder as well as crimes involving national security and terrorism. Some of her assignments included the USAO's National Security Section and the Violent and Organized Crime Section. She also served as a USAO liaison and advisor in Nigeria, helping legal and government officials in their efforts to combat public corruption. Then, in 2015, De Witt became senior litigation counsel at the USAO where she was instrumental in spearheading a violent crime reduction program in the city of Compton. As part of that initiative, De Witt started a youth tennis clinic that provided the participants with tennis equipment and coaching at no charge.
She has received the California Lawyer's Attorney of the Year Award.
She has also been a member of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles.
