The Hon. Susan I. Etezadi is a judge for the Superior Court of San Mateo County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John Schwartz.
Etezadi earned a B.A. in sociology from the University of California, Davis in 1980. She then completed a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1983.
Prior to her appointment to the bench, she served in the Office of the District Attorney of San Mateo County as a deputy district attorney from 1984 to 2006. During her tenure there, she prosecuted career criminal cases, sexual assault cases, homicide cases, insurance fraud cases, and environmental law violations.
She has also taught Principles and Procedures of the Criminal Justice System at San Mateo Community College, Criminal Procedure at the San Francisco Law School, and Trial Advocacy at the National College of District Attorneys.
Etezadi served as a board member of the San Mateo Legal Aid Society, California Women Lawyers, and the Women Lawyers Section of the San Mateo Bar Association. Her other memberships have included the Iranian-American Bar Association, the California Judges Association, and Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom.
Born in Forest Hills, New York, her father was an Iranian diplomat, and her mother worked for the United States Department of State. Shortly after her birth, she moved with her family to Iran, where they lived until 1974.
