The Hon. Steven M. Gevercer is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2012 by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Gary S. Mullen (Ret.).
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Gevercer received his B.A. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law.
After graduating from law school, Gevercer would begin his legal career as a sole practitioner, opening the Law Office of Steven M. Gevercer in 1984.
A year later, he left the private sector to became a deputy public defender for the Tulare County Public Defender's Office from 1985 to 1989. He also served as a senior trial attorney for the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office from 1989 to 1997. Gevercer would also join the California Department of Justice's Office of the Attorney General in 1989. During his twenty-three years with the A.G.'s office, Gevercer served as a legislative advocate for the Legislative Unit, and a deputy attorney general, supervising deputy attorney general, and senior assistant attorney general for the Tort and Condemnation Section of the A.G.'s Civil Division. He would hold the position of senior assistant attorney general from 2011 until his appointment to the Superior Court a year later.
During his time on the bench, Judge Gevercer has presided over a trial and civil writs calendar. He also served as the supervising probate judge in 2016 and 2017. While there, Judge Gevercer was instrumental in the development of a program that provides pro bono services to unrepresented individuals.
