The Hon. Steven Kirkland is a judge of the Three Hundred Thirty-Fourth District Court in Harris County, Texas. He lost the Democratic primary in 2020, and he will give up his seat at the end of December. Kirkland stood as a candidate in 2017 for the Texas Supreme Court.
Kirkland went to Rice University for his B.A. and earned a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Houston's Law Center.
He worked for Texaco and then had a lot of experience with environmental law. Kirkland also practiced commercial, bankruptcy, transactional and non-profit law.
In December 2006, Kirkland received recognition from the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston and Harris County for developing and implementing Houston's Homeless Recovery Court. It was the first such court in the State of Texas. He is also active in promoting recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, historic preservation, affordable housing, and LGBT rights.
Kirkland is the first of his family to graduate college.
He is a Democrat.
