Hon. Stanley L. Pritzker is an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department. He was appointed to the Appellate Division by Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2017.
At the time of his appointment, Pritzker was serving as a justice of the New York State Supreme Court in the Fourth Judicial Judicial District, a position he was elected to in 2013. Prior to that, he sat as a judge for the Washington County Court Multi-Bench (2005 to 2013) and was an acting justice of the Washington County Supreme Court (2007 to 2013). In addition, he also presided on the Washington County Drug Treatment Court.
Pritzker received a B.A. in philosophy (1978) and an M.S.W. in social work (1980) from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He went on to earn a J.D. from St. John’s University Law School in 1986.
While attending law school, Pritzker worked as a New York City social worker.
Prior to joining the bench, he had practiced as an attorney in private practice for almost twenty years. As such, Pritzker handled civil, municipal, and criminal litigation issues, as well as served as a children’s attorney and an advocate for children in PINS, abuse and juvenile delinquency proceedings, and divorces.
He served as a member of the Family Court Rules Advisory Committee (2007 to 2014) and was appointed to serve as a member of the Unified Court System’s Second Special Commission on Fiduciary Appointments.
Pritzker served as chair of the Washington County Bar Association’s Public Defender Committee (chair) and also served as a past-president of the Association.
He was a resident of Hartford, New York at the time of his appointment to the Appellate Division.
