Biography

The Hon. Sonia Cortés is a judge for the Yolo County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2015. At the time of her appointment, she held the distinction of being the first Latina to be seated in Yolo County.

She is registered as a Democrat.

Judge Cortés graduated with her B.A. in political science and psychology from the University of California, Davis in 1993. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1996.

While in law school, Cortés clerked at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund in San Francisco. Then, after she graduated from law school, Cortés became an attorney at Legal Aid of the North Bay, where she practiced for two years. In 2000, she joined the La Raza Centro Legal, serving as an immigration attorney for one year before then becoming the coordinating immigration attorney there in 2001. The following year, Cortés served briefly as a managing attorney at the International Institute of the East Bay, before landing at the Yolo County Counsel's Office later that same year. During her five-year tenure at the County Counsel's Office, Cortés began as a deputy county counsel but was then elevated to senior county counsel in 2007. She would hold that position until her appointment to the Superior Court in 2015.

During her time on the bench, Judge Cortés has presided in the Criminal Division.

She was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States with her family as a child. Her parents settled in Winters, California.
