Judge Sean Lafferty - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Sean Lafferty is a judge for the Riverside County Superior Court in California. He was elected to the bench in 2014.

Judge Lafferty graduated with his B.A. in history from the University of California, Riverside in 1991. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 1996.

After law school, Lafferty clerked for the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office. He accepted a full-time position as a deputy district attorney with the Contra Costa D.A.'s office after his clerkship and would remain there for four years. Then, in 2001, Lafferty became a deputy district attorney for the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. During his seventeen-year tenure there, Lafferty would be assigned to the Sexual Assault/Child Abuse Unit and also helped prosecute capital murder, sexual assault, domestic violence, and gang offenses. Lafferty would matriculate through the ranks at the Riverside D.A.'s office, being named a supervising deputy district attorney in 2007, a chief deputy district attorney in 2008 and then an assistant district attorney in 2011. In that role, he would be tasked with managing the Indio and Southwest divisions. He was serving in that capacity at the time of his election to the Superior Court in 2014.

While on the bench, Judge Lafferty has presided over a juvenile delinquency calendar at the Southwest Juvenile Court.

Judge Lafferty, who was born in Contra Costa, California, is a vegan and enjoys running and weightlifting in his free time.
