Biography

The Hon. Scott R. Herin is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2018 by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Michael J. Raphael to the Court of Appeal.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Herin received his B.A. from Michigan State University. He went on to earn his J.D. from the Detroit College of Law (now Michigan State University College of Law).

After working as a public defender for the Legal Aid and Defender Association of Detroit, Herin moved to California, where he would spend the bulk of his legal career. He briefly worked as an attorney for the Dependency Court Legal Services in 1998, before becoming a deputy public defender at the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office in 1999. He would remain with the P.D.'s office until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2018. During his almost twenty years as a public defender, Herin served as an advocate for individuals who suffered from mental illness and intellectual disabilities.
