The Hon. Sanjay T. Kumar is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Susan Isacoff.
His judicial seat was challenged in the 2012 election, his challenger allegedly choosing him because of his foreign-sounding name. Judge Kumar won handily with 60% of the vote.
He is a registered Republican.
Judge Kumar received his B.B.A. from Loyola University, Chicago. He went on to earn his J.D. from Pepperdine Law School.
Kumar began his legal career as a deputy attorney general. During his time with the A.G.'s office, he argued on behalf of the state's prosecution of the infamous Menendez brothers during their murder trial. In 2001 Kumar became a court commissioner for the Superior Court. He was serving in that capacity at the time of his appointment to the bench in 2005.
