Judge Sandra Stabile Harwood - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Sandra Stabile Harwood is a judge for the Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas (Domestic Relations and Juvenile Division) in Ohio. She was elected to the bench on November 6, 2012.

During her tenure in the Domestic Relations and Juvenile Division, Stabile Harwood was instrumental in overseeing the creation of the Trumbull County Juvenile Drug Court, a specialized docket that is certified by the Ohio Supreme Court. In addition, she has presided over the Trumbull County Family Dependency Court and served as chair of the court’s Advisory Committee.

While on the bench, Stabile Harwood has also sat on the Ohio Judicial Conference Legislative Committee, the Domestic Relations Law and Procedure Committee, and the Juvenile Law and Procedure Committee.

She received a B.B.A. from Kent State University. Stabile Harwood went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Akron School of Law. She also attended the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Fellowship Program at the University of Wisconsin, Robert M. LaFollette School of Public Affairs.

Stabile Harwood was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

Prior to joining the judiciary, she worked for over twenty years as a family law private practice attorney and was a member in the Ohio House of Representatives (65th District), serving four consecutive terms (2002 to 2010). During that time, Stabile Harwood held the distinction of being the first woman to chair the Ohio House Judiciary Committee. She also sponsored legislation concerning health insurance costs in child support orders and served on several House committees including the Aging and Disability Services Committee, Civil and Commercial Law Committee, Insurance Committee, and Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review.

As an advocate for families and children, Stabile Harwood spent ten years working as in-house counsel and the chief administrative hearing officer for the Trumbull County Child Support Enforcement Agency.

She served on the Trumbull County Board of Elections (chair), the National Foundation of Women Legislators (Ohio State Director), and the Ohio Family Support Association (past president).

Some of her other memberships included the National Association of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the American Judges Association, the Ohio Juvenile Judges Association, the Ohio Domestic Relations Judges Association, the Trumbull County Bar Association, and the Ohio State Bar Association.

Her accolades included being named Legislator of the Year by the Ohio Child Support Director Association (2006) and receiving the Breast Cancer Hero Award from the Ohio Breast Cancer Coalition (2005).

Stabile Harwood is married and has five children.

She is registered as a Democrat.
