Judge Sabina A. Helton: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Sabina A. Helton is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench in 2018 by former governor Jerry Brown. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Lloyd C. Loomis (Ret.).

She is a registered Democrat.

Judge Helton received her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1990.

After graduating from law school, Helton began her legal career at Pillsbury, Madison, and Sutro where she would serve as a senior attorney from 1990 to 2000. She then became senior counsel at Kelley, Drye, and Warren in 2000, Mitsubishi Motors America in 2002, and at Van Etten, Suzmoto, and Becket LLP in 2003. Then, in 2006, Helton became a partner at McGuireWoods LLP. She remained with the firm until 2012 when she became a shareholder at the law firm of Parker Milliken APC. Helton left Parker Milliken in 2015 to join Buchalter APC as a shareholder. She would remain there until her appointment to the Superior Court two years later.

Judge Helton, who was born in Japan, served as past-president of the Japanese American Bar Association and was a member of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.

Helton also served on the board of directors for the Go For Broke National Education Center.
