Biography

The Hon. Roger C. Chan is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed by former governor Jerry Brown on June 28, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Richard A. Kramer.

Chan earned a B.A. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley. He then received a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1998.

Chan began his legal career as a public defender, alternating back-and-forth between the Office of the Public Defender in Alameda County and the Office of the Public Defender in San Francisco County.

Chan co-founded the East Bay Children’s Law Offices in 2009. This is an organization that represents youth in child welfare, probate guardianship, and juvenile defense cases. Chan served as its executive director until his appointment to the bench.

Chan is registered as a Democrat.

He is the first-known LGBT person of color to serve on the Superior Court of San Francisco County. He is also the first Korean-American to be appointed to the Superior Court of San Francisco County
