Biography

The Hon. Robert T. Johnson is a Justice of the Bronx County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the Twelfth Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2016.

Justice Johnson had previously sat as a judge for the Criminal Court of the City of New York after receiving an appointment to the seat by former Mayor Ed Koch in 1986. During his tenure on the Criminal Court, Justice Johnson was appointed to serve as an Acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. He held these posts until being elected to serve as the Bronx County District Attorney in 1988. He would not return to the bench until his election to the Supreme Court in 2016.

He is a registered Democrat.

After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1968.

Later, Johnson graduated with his B.A. in philosophy from the City College of New York in 1972. He went on to earn his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1975.

After graduating from law school, he first worked as a staff attorney in the Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Defense Division.

Johnson left the Legal Aid Society in 1978 to join the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office, where he served as an assistant district attorney for eight years. During his first stint with the D.A.’s office, he rose to the rank of Narcotics Bureau Chief. Johnson left the office in 1986 after receiving an appointment to the Criminal Court.

After serving two years on the bench, Johnson was elected to serve as the top prosecutor in the Bronx in 1988. At the time, he held the distinction of being the first African American to be elected District Attorney in the state of New York. Johnson would subsequently be re-elected to the position for six terms. He served as the Bronx District Attorney for twenty-seven years, making him the longest-tenured D.A. in the County’s history. He remained there until his election to the Supreme Court bench in 2016.

He has been a past president of the New York State District Attorneys Association and has also served on its Board of Directors.

Justice Johnson was born in the Bronx, New York. He is married to the Hon. Dianne T. Renwick, Associate Justice of the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division, First Judicial Department.
