Judge Robert S. Tafoya - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Robert S. Tafoya is a judge for the Superior Court of Kern County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gray Davis in August 2002.

Tafoya earned a B.A. in history and economics from California State University, Sacramento. He then continued his studies, completing an M.Ed. from the University of Southern California. After graduating from the University of Southern California, he was a high school teacher for two years. He then received a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

He began his legal career in 1979, helping to start the Organization for the Legal Advancement of Raza. Then, in 1982, he joined the Office of the Public Defender of Kern County as a deputy public defender.

He served there for the next three years, eventually leaving to start Rawson and Tafoya in 1985. Ten years later, he moved to Chain, Younger, Cohn & Stiles. He practiced there until his appointment to the bench.

Tafoya has served as president of the Kern County Bar Association.

His wife, Sandra Serrano, has served as president of Bakersfield College as well as chancellor for the Kern Community College District.

When he is not presiding over cases, Tafoya enjoys reading. His favorite authors include David McCullough, Khaled Hosseini, Doris Kearns Goodwin, David Brooks, and Isabel Allende.
