Judge Robert K. Schaffer - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Robert K. Schaffer is a judge for the 152nd District Court of Texas in Harris County. He was elected to the bench in 2008.

On the bench, Schaffer has presided over the Civil Court. In 2012, his fellow judges selected him to serve as the Local Administrative Judge of the Civil Trial Division. A year later he was chosen to serve as the Local Administrative Judge of all the District Courts of Harris County. He was also selected by the State Multidistrict Litigation Panel as the statewide pretrial judge for the Toyota Unintended Acceleration Multidistrict Litigation (2010), the General Motors Ignition Switch Multidistrict Litigation (2015), and Opioid Multidistrict Litigation (2017).

Schaffer received a B.A. from the University of Arizona in 1974. He worked in the public sector in Austin before completing a J.D. at South Texas College of Law Houston in 1984.

Schaffer practiced law in the Houston metropolitan area for 24 years and served as a mediator for 16 years. He began his legal career as an associate with a small Houston law firm before opening his own law office in 1990. He continued in that practice until he became a judge in 2009.

Schaffer was selected as Judge of the Year by the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialist and Distinguished Alum by the South Texas College of Law Alumni Association.

He was elected to serve as President of the Houston Trial Lawyers Association (1998-1999), Houston Trial Lawyers Foundation (1999-2000), and the South Texas College of Law Alumni Association (1991-1993). Schaffer has served on the local grievance committee for the State Bar of Texas and the Southwest Regional Board of the Anti-Defamation League.

He also sat as a member of the Harris County Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee.

Schaffer, a native Houstonian, is married and has three children.

He is registered as a Democrat.
