The Hon. Robert J. Gerard is a judge for the Orange County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Gavin Newsom on April 28, 2020, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Robert C. Gannon.
Gerard earned a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1987.
After graduating from law school, Gerard entered into private practice. He started as an associate at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton (1987 to 1990), Pettis, Tester, Kruse & Krinsky (1990 to 1994), and Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro (1994 to 1997). He was then named partner in the Labor and Employment Practice Group at Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro. He worked in that capacity until 2000, at which time he became shareholder and chair of the Labor and Employment Practice Group at Friedman, Stroffe & Gerard.
Gerard has served as president of the Orange County Bar Association in 2003.
A resident of Newport Beach at the time of his appointment, Gerard is a graduate of the Los Angeles Police Department Academy (Class 5-81). He briefly worked as a police officer before attending law school.
He is registered without party preference.
