Judge Robert E. Flournoy, III - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Robert E. Flournoy, III is a judge for the Cobb County Superior Court in Georgia. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Roy Barnes in 2000 and was subsequently re-elected to the seat in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018.

During his judicial tenure, Flournoy served as the Chief Judge of the Cobb Judicial Circuit from 2010 to 2012.

Prior to joining the bench, he had worked for twenty years as a private practice attorney in Cobb County. During that time, he handled general, civil and criminal trial and appellate cases in all courts, and his practice focused on family law matters.

Flournoy received a B.B.A. from the University of Georgia in 1974. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Georgia School of Law in 1979.

His memberships have included the State Bar of Georgia, the Cobb County Bar Association, and the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association.

From a civic standpoint, Flournoy has been involved with the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Arts (former vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees), the Downtown Marietta Development Authority and Board of Historic Review (former chairman), Premier Bancshares (Board of Directors), First Alliance Bank (Board of Directors and past chairman of the Audit Committee), the Marietta Kiwanis Club, and the First United Methodist Church.

Flournoy was named Cobb County Judge of the Year in 2005. He is also the recipient of the Jimmy Berry Champion of Justice Award (2015).

He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to Marietta in 1957, where he graduated from Marietta High School (1970). Flournoy and his wife, Julie, have two sons.
