The Hon. Robert D. McGuiness is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John Kraetzer (Ret.).

Judge McGuiness received his bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1975.

McGuiness entered into private practice after graduating from law school. He first partnered with his wife, Yolanda Northridge, at their firm McGuiness and Northridge for ten years. He then became a sole practitioner after she became an Alameda County judge. While in private practice, McGuiness specialized in civil and family law. He would remain in solo practice until his appointment to the bench in 2005.

While on the bench, Judge McGuiness has presided over a civil direct calendar.

Judge McGuiness, who was born in Oakland, California, has deep judicial roots running through his family. His father, the Hon. William J. McGuiness (deceased), was a founding member of the Oakland Municipal Courts and was also an Alameda County Superior Court judge at the time of his retirement in 1974. McGuiness' older brother William, has served as a justice on the California Court of Appeal for the First District, and of course, Judge McGuiness' wife Yolanda Northridge, preceded him to the Alameda bench.
