Hon. Richard M. Hughes, III is a judge for the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He was elected to the bench on November 8, 2011.
During his judicial tenure, Hughes was named president judge of the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas.
He received a bachelor’s degree from Lafayette College and a master’s degree from Magdalen College Oxford. Hughes went on to complete a J.D. at Washington and Lee School of Law.
Prior to his election, he was a private practice attorney in Mountain Top and Kingston, gaining experience in civil, criminal and family law. His legal career also included an eight-year stint as an assistant district attorney with the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office beginning in 1988.
In 2009, Hughes made an unsuccessful bid for a seat on the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas.
His memberships included the Forty Fort Cemetery Association, the Leadership Wilkes-Barre Mentor Program, and Northeast Counseling Services.
Hughes is registered as a Republican.
