Judge Richard J. McNally, Jr. - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Richard J. McNally, Jr. is a justice for the Rensselaer County Supreme Court in the Third Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the bench in 2014.

McNally earned a B.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1983. Four years later, he completed a J.D. at St. John’s University School of Law.

Early in his legal career, McNally joined the Office of the District Attorney of Rensselaer County, where he served as an assistant district attorney from 1989 to 1992. At that time, McNally transferred to the Office of the Public Defender. He served as an assistant public defender for the next five years.

McNally overlapped his tenure in the Office of the Public Defender with private sector work. He practiced as an associate at Bartle, McGrane, Duffy & Jones from 1993 to 2002, specializing in matrimonial, criminal, probate, banking, municipal, zoning, personal injury, title insurance, and real estate matters. During this time, he also served as a village attorney for the Village of Valley Falls from 1992 to 2007.

Then, in 2007, McNally performed a short stint as assistant conflict defender for the Office of the Conflict Defender in Rensselaer County before becoming district attorney in the Office of the District Attorney of Rensselaer County in 2008. He held this position until his election to the bench.
