Judge Richard Ambro - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Richard Ambro is a Justice of the Suffolk County Supreme Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the Supreme Court in 2013. Justice Ambro also served as a judge for the Suffolk County Court in the 10th Judicial District after his appointment to the bench by former Governor David Paterson in 2010.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Ambro received his B.A. from the State University of New York at Oneonta in 1981. He went on to earn his J.D. from Widener University School of Law in 1984.

Ambro began his legal career as a staff attorney with the Legal Aid Society in 1985. Then, in 1988, he began serving as a trial attorney in the Felony Trial Bureau at Legal Aid Society, a position he would hold until 2002.

It was at that time Ambro became a principal law clerk for the Hon. C. Randall Hinrichs, a judge for the Suffolk County Court in the 10th Judicial District. Ambro held that position until his appointment to the Suffolk County Court in 2010. After a year on the bench, Ambro returned to his position as principal law clerk with Judge Hinrichs in 2011. Then, in 2013, Ambro was elected to the Supreme Court.

His memberships have included the Suffolk County Bar Association and the Suffolk County Criminal Bar Association.

At the time of his election to the Supreme Court, Justice Ambro resided in Wading River with his wife and son.
