Judge Ravi K. Sandill - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Ravi K. Sandill is a judge for the 127th District Court of Texas in Harris County. He was elected to the bench in 2008 and re-elected in 2012, 2016, and 2020. Sandill holds the distinction of being the first district court judge of South Asian descent in Texas.

During his judicial tenure, Sandill has presided over the Civil Court. In 2018, he was credited with being the first judge in the country to issue a standing order granting parental leave to counsel following the birth or adoption of a child.

He received a B.A. in government from the University of Texas at Austin in 1998. While at university, Sandill was the founding member of the Central Texas Model United Nations and served as a summer intern for President Bill Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisors and an intern for former Senator John Kerry. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Houston Law Center in 2001.

After graduating from law school, Sandill worked as a briefing attorney for the Hon. Murry Cohen, a Senior Justice of the Texas First District Court of Appeals. He then went into private practice in Houston, working as an attorney with Steele Sturm, PLLC. He focused on commercial, appellate, and trade secret litigation.

Sandill serves on the board of directors of the Garland R. Walker American Inn of Court, the University of Houston Law Center's Alumni Association, and the American Leadership Forum. He is a fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, the Houston Bar Foundation, and the Houston Young Lawyers Foundation. Sandill is also an Alexis de Tocqueville member of the United Way and a member of the advisory board of iSTEM, an educational program.

He was recognized as an Extraordinary Minority by Texas Lawyer magazine and is the recipient of the Achievement in Public Service Award from the University of Houston's Alumni Association (2015) and the Distinguished Jurist Award from the African American Lawyers section of the State Bar of Texas (2021).

Sandill grew up on military bases throughout Texas. His father, retired Lieutenant Colonel Brij Sandill, served in the United States Army and the United States Air Force. Sandill attended high school at the United States Royal Air Force Base Lakenheath in England. He and his wife, Kelly, a partner at Hunton Andrews Kurth, LLP, have one adopted son. The family resides in Houston, Texas, with their two dogs, Bleu and Jules.

He and his wife are supporters of Planned Parenthood, Annie’s List, the Human Rights Campaign’s Federal Club, the Houston LGBTQ Political Caucus, the Houston Food Bank, and the United Way of Greater Houston. Sandill also served on the Board of Trustees of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s Gulf Coast Chapter.

He is registered as a Democrat.
