Biography

The Hon. Randa Trapp is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Gray Davis on July 23, 2003.

Trapp earned a B.A. in political science from San Jose State University in 1982. She then received a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1985.

She began her legal career as a deputy attorney general in the Office of the Attorney General of California in 1985. During her four-year tenure there, she spent seven months serving as a special deputy district attorney for the Office of the District Attorney of San Diego County.

In 1989 she left the public sector and joined a local civil firm. She practiced there for five years before moving to Sempra Energy, where she represented Sempra Energy in complex commercial litigation and transactions matters.

Trapp has served as president of the San Diego Chapter of the NAACP as well as president of the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association. She is a former regional director of the California Women Lawyers, and she has served on the Board of Directors of the California Association of Black Lawyers and the Lawyers Club of San Diego. Trapp was also appointed by the chief of police to serve on the Community Advisory Board on Racial Profiling.

She is a recipient of the YWCA Tribute to Women and Industry Award as well as the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association’s Thurgood Marshall Award. She was also named the 79th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year in 2004.

She has been an active member of the Alpha Kappa Sorority. She has also served on the Board of Directors for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Trapp has taught as an adjunct instructor at the University of San Diego School of Law.

Trapp was born and raised in San Diego, California. She is a veteran of the United States Navy, and she was the first African American woman appointed to the bench in San Diego County. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and exercising.
