Biography

The Hon. Rafael A. Ongkeko is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench on October 16, 2002, by former governor Gray Davis. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. J.D. Smith (Ret.).

Judge Ongkeko received his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1975. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law in 1978.

Ongkeko began his legal career at the Los Angeles County Counsel's Office where he served as a deputy county counsel. Ongkeko spent 19 years with the County Counsel's Office where he handled civil litigation for most of that time.

Ongkeko spent a brief period of his legal career in the private sector, entering into private practice from 1998 to 2000. During that time he opened his own law firm, Ongkeko, Doyle, and Nichols, where he continued to practice civil litigation.

At the time of his appointment to the Superior Court in October of 2002, Onkeko had returned to the County Counsel's Office where he was serving as a principal deputy counsel.

Judge Ongkeko also served as a volunteer arbitrator for the Superior Court.
