The Hon. Philip B. Alfeld is an associate judge for the 3rd Judicial Circuit Court in Illinois. He was appointed to the bench by the judges of the 3rd Judicial Circuit in 2014, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Dean Sweet.
The 3rd Judicial Circuit includes Madison County and Bond County.
Prior to his appointment, Alfeld was of counsel at Schrempf, Kelly, Napp & Darr, a law firm he joined in 1998. Before that, he spent time as a sole practitioner in his own private practice (1995 to 1998). During this time, Alfeld supplemented his practice with service as an assistant state’s attorney for the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office (1989 to 2014).
Alfeld earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1975. He then completed a J.D. at Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1980.
After graduating from law school, Alfeld entered into private practice. He started as an associate in the Law Office of Paul L. Pratt. He worked in that capacity until 1985, at which time he became an associate at Talbert, Carlson & Mallon. Alfeld then began working as a partner at Carlson & Alfeld (1986 to 1988) and Kardis, Forbes & Alfeld (1988 to 1995).
His memberships have included the Illinois State Bar Association, the American Criminal Justice Association, the American Bar Association, the Madison County Bar Association, the Greene County Bar Association, and the American Association of Trial Lawyers. He also sat as the president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary of the Alton-Wood River Bar Association.
Raised in Carrollton, Illinois, Alfeld attended Carrollton High School. He and his wife, Amy, have lived in Godfrey for twenty years.
