Peter I Breen (Ret.) was a judge for the Second Judicial District Court in Washoe County, Nevada. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mike O’Callaghan in 1973. He retired in 2006. After retiring, Breen continued to preside as a senior judge.
He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1960. He went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Santa Clara Law School in 1963.
Prior to joining the bench, Breen was an attorney in private practice.
While on the bench, he presided over the Felony Adult Drug Court. He is also credited with designing and presiding over Specialty Courts since 1995. One such court was the first drug court in Nevada.
Breen received the Legacy of Justice Award from the Nevada Supreme Court in 2010.
He is a third-generation judge. His father (Third Judicial District) and grandfather (Fifth Judicial District) both served as District Court Judges.
Breen, who was born in Reno, Nevada, is married and has four grown children.
