Judge Pedro Ruiz - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Pedro Ruiz (Ret.) was a judge for the County Court at Law No. 5 in Fort Bend County, Texas. He was appointed to the County Court by the Commissioners Court in 2018, filling the vacancy created by the passing of Ron Cohen (deceased). Ruiz was not retained to the seat in the subsequent election that occurred in November of that same year.

His prior judicial experience included serving as an associate judge for the 240th, 268th, 400th, and 434th District Courts in Fort Bend County (2003 to 2015). He has also served as a magistrate judge and a judge of the Tax Court.

During his hiatus from the bench, Ruiz first practiced as of counsel at Roberts Markel Weinberg Butler Hailey PC (2015 to 2016) before rejoining the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office for his second stint as an assistant district attorney (2016 to 2018).

He first joined the District Attorney’s Office in 1991, working there for twelve years before joining the judiciary in 2003. Ruiz also managed his own private practice as a sole practitioner.

He attended Houston Baptist University, where he earned a B.S. in English and political science in 1986. Ruiz went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Houston Law Center in 1989.

After leaving the bench, he joined Zendeh Del & Associates, PLLC as of counsel in 2019.

Ruiz is married and has two children.
